The Holistic Difference

There is an average of 82,000 ingredients currently being used in personal care products. One in eight of those contain industrial chemicals. The Environmental Working Group estimates the average adult is exposed to 126 of those ingredients through daily personal grooming. The average woman uses 12 products per day, while men use an average of 6 products.

At Holistic we have dedicated endless hours of research and planning in selecting our bath & skin care products for both children and adults. We quickly realized we were facing a highly unregulated industry that loosely used words such as organic and natural. Our research was assisted by Skin Deep www.ewg.org and The David Suzuki Foundation www.davidsuzuki.org .

One of the most disturbing facts about some of these chemicals is that they are hormone disruptors, xenoestrogens. The implications of these estrogen mimicking chemicals is far ranging for children, adults and wildlife.

Xenoestrogens are industrially made compounds such as PCB, BPA and Phthalates, widely used in recent decades, that have estrogenic effects to the living organisms. Although they differ chemically from the naturally occurring estrogenic substances internally produced by their endocrine system. Their potential ecological and human health impact is recently under extensive study by many scientific institutions and independent researchers. Its name derives from the Greek words xeno, meaning "foreign" and the word estrogen, the hormone which giving fertility to the female mammals (for "estrus" -Greek- meaning sexual desire and "gene" -Greek- for "to generate"). It literally means the foreign, not coming from within female sex hormone (see estrogen). In modern bibliography are also called "environmental hormones" or "EDC" (for Endocrine disrupting compounds) and most scientists that had study the phenomenon including The Endocrine Society regards them a serious environmental hazard having hormone disruption effects both on wildlife and the humans.

At Holistic our products are all made of natural ingredients. Many of our product lines are handmade in small batches and are sourced locally and regionally. We also carry exclusive spa and salon quality products from North America and Europe.

A commitment to carrying natural and organic products starts with a list of what our products DO NOT CONTAIN:

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE- Fragrance on a label can indicates the presence of up to 4,000 separate synthetic ingredients.  It may mask phthalates, which act as endocrine disruptors and may cause reproductive and developmental harm.

TRICLOSAN- Triclosan is an antibacterial widely used in soaps, toothpastes, and deodorants.  It has been detected in breast milk and one recent study found that it interferes with testosterone activity in cells.

COAL TAR- Coal Tar is a known human carcinogen used as an active ingredient in dandruff shampoos and anti itch creams.  Coal tar based dyes such as FD&C Blue used in toothpaste and FD&C Green 3 used in mouthwash , have been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies when injected under the skin.

PARABENS- Methyl and Propyl Paraben are the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics.  Studies show they are potential hormone disruptors, and can effect male reproductive function.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG)- Propylene Glycol is used as a “surfactant” or wetting agent and solvent, PG is actually the active component in antifreeze.  There is no difference between the PG used in industry and the PG used in personnel care products.  It is used used in industry to break down protein and cellular structure (what skin is made of) yet is found in most forms of deodorants, make up, cosmetics, hair products, lotions, baby wipes and toothpaste.

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE- SLS and SLES are used as detergents and surfactants, these closely related compounds are found in car wash soaps, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. Unfortunely, SLS and SLES are used more widely as one of the major ingredients in cosmetics, toothpaste, hair conditioner and about 90% of all shampoos and products that foam.  Research has shown that SLS when combined with other chemicals can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens.  Other studies have indicated that SLS easily penetrates through skin and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.

POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL- Pegs are used in making cleansers to dissolve oil and grease as well as thicken products.  Because of their effectiveness, Pegs are often used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners and yet are found in many personnel care products.  Pegs contribute to stripping the natural moisture factor, leaving the immune system vulnerable.  They are a known human carcinogen.

IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA- Urea is one of the harshest preservatives that release formaldehyde.  According to the Mayo Clinic, formaldehyde can irritate the respitory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations.

DEA, MEA, TEA- These are hormone disrupting chemicals and are known to form cancer causing nitrates and nitrosamines.  They are most commonly found in personnel care products that foam.  Dr. Samuel Eptein, Professor of Environmental; Health at the University of Illinois said “repeated skin applications of DEA based detergents resulted in a major increase in two cancers  - liver and kidney.

PHTHALATES- Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals used as plastic softeners or solvents.  They are found in many leading beauty care products.  They are shown to damage liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems in animal studies. Phthalates can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled.

SILOXANES - Siloxanes are used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten.  Suspected endocrine disruptor and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane).  Harmful to fish and wildlife.

PETROLATUM - Used in some hair products for shine and as a moisture barrier in some lip balms, lip sticks and moisturizers. A petroleum product  can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which could cause cancer.
